Aviation

The EKU aviation program offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Aviation with five concentrations: Aerospace Management, Air Traffic Management, Professional Aeronautics, Professional Flight, and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). These concentrations integrate coursework in business management, communication, mathematics, science, and general education providing students with a well-rounded foundation for careers in the aviation industry. In addition to the bachelor's degree concentrations, the EKU Aviation program offers an Associate of Science in Air Traffic Management and minors in Aerospace Management, Aviation (Flight), and Unmanned Aircraft Systems.

The Aerospace Management Concentration prepares students for dynamic careers in the aerospace industry focusing on effective leadership, operations, and strategic planning. This concentration emphasizes the managerial aspects of aviation, including airport and airline operations, safety management systems, regulatory compliance, logistics, and organizational behavior.

The Air Traffic Management Concentration prepares students for professional careers within the National Airspace System, aviation operations, and air traffic management-related fields. The curriculum emphasizes air traffic control procedures, aviation safety, airspace management, weather, navigation, and aviation regulations. Graduates are prepared for careers in air traffic control, airport and airline operations, aviation management, and other sectors supporting the safe and efficient movement of aircraft within the aviation system.

The Professional Aeronautics Concentration is a degree-completion program designed for students who have earned a two-year technical degree in an aviation related field from a community or technical college. These programs include Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) maintenance, helicopter or airplane professional flight, air traffic control, aerospace management, or unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). This concentration builds on existing technical degrees by adding advanced coursework in aerospace management and operations providing graduates opportunities in leadership and administrative roles within the aviation industry.

The Professional Flight Concentration is an FAA Part 141 approved Flight School and the only university program in Kentucky authorized to offer the 1000-hour Restricted Airline Transport Pilot (R-ATP) certificate. This program provides future pilots with the advanced flight training, academic preparation, and flight time required to pursue careers as professional aviators.

The Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Concentration prepares students with the knowledge and hands-on skills needed for successful careers in the rapidly growing UAS industry. The curriculum emphasizes UAS operations, safety protocols, airspace regulations, mission planning, and the integration of emerging technologies. Graduates are prepared for careers industries increasingly reliant on drone technology for efficiency and innovation such as agriculture, construction, infrastructure inspection, public safety, environmental monitoring, and law enforcement.

Aviation

AVN 105.  UAS Safety and Regulations.  (3 Credits)  
This course provides an overview of small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS). Topics include the history of UAS, regulations, remote sensors, imagery equipment, industry and societal implications, career outlooks, ethical considerations, and the basic components required to operate an UAS. This course will prepare students for real-world safe operation of sUAS, and will provide basic understanding of the regulations in preparation for small Unmanned Aircraft Systems FAA 107 certification test. [CFR Part 107 are the Federal Aviation Administration regulations for the certification and operation of small Unmanned Aircraft Systems]

AVN 107.  Introduction to Unmanned Aircraft Systems.  (3 Credits)  
A. (Formerly AVN 170) This course provides an introduction to Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). A history of UAS, typical applications and an overview of regulations, airframe and powerplant systems, sensors, ground control stations, airspace, weather, and other foundational skills needed to safely operate UAS in the U.S. airspace systems will be covered. Credit will not be awarded for both AVN 107 and AVN 170.

AVN 161.  Private Pilot- Airplane: Ground (Part 61).  (5 Credits)  
A. Prerequisite: MAT 114 or passed 111A/111B/112A/112B or higher with a minimum grade of "C", a minimum score of 22 on the mathematics portion of the ACT, a minimum score of 530 on the mathematics portion of the SAT, or a passing score on an KYOTE algebra placement test of 14. Provides aeronautical knowledge necessary to prepare student pilots to successfully complete FAA Private Pilot-Airplane written examination.

AVN 257.  Air Traffic Management Regulations and Procedures.  (3 Credits)  
A. Prerequisite: AVN 180. A comprehensive study of air traffic control regulations, procedural standards, and operational doctrine governing the National Airspace System. Emphasis is placed on FAA regulatory authority, JO 7110.65 structure, separation standards, coordination procedures, and compliance with federal aviation regulations.

A. Prerequisite: AVN 257. A detailed study of airport traffic control tower operations within the National Airspace System. Emphasis is placed on runway separation standards, surface movement control, traffic pattern operations, local and ground control responsibilities, phraseology discipline, and operational decision-making in the tower environment.

A. Corequisite: AVN 271. A performance-based laboratory applying control tower operational procedures in a simulated airport environment. AVN 280.  Glass Cockpit Technology.  (1 Credit)  
A. Prerequisite: AVN 220. Course provides instruction in operation of the Garmin G1000 glass cockpit to prepare students for operation of a G1000-equipped airplane in the Commercial Pilot Syllabus. Course includes 3 hours in a Garmin G1000 training device.

AVN 290.  UAS Flight Operations.  (3 Credits)  
This course covers the techniques and best practices required to safely and successfully utilize and operate drones for commercial purposes. Every aspect of flight operation is covered, from equipment, preflight planning and legal compliance to operational procedures, flight training, and data collection. Students work through the entire mission cycle, starting with legal compliance, planning, and then pre and post flight operations. Students will gain hands-on experience using the drone flight simulators in the Drone Lab. In-class simulation training is to prepare them for an outdoor real flight experience.

A. Prerequisite: AVN 257. An introduction to terminal radar approach control (TRACON) operations within the National Airspace System. Emphasis is placed on IFR separation standards, radar identification methods, vectoring procedures, arrival and departure sequencing, and coordination between radar and tower facilities.

Emphasis is placed on applying Crew Resource Management (CRM), leadership, and risk management in complex flight scenarios. The course prepares students for the FAA Commercial Pilot Knowledge and Practical Tests.
